Hideaway

Lyrics: Rob Allen and Nick Selchow
Music: Nick Selchow

Hideaway started many years ago as a beautiful, intricate chordal song structure by Nick. When he played the music for the rest of the band, we knew it was fantastic and talked many times about turning it into a Kinetic song.

We took a few stabs at lyrics over the years, but it took a Kinetic camping trip in 2018 for Rob to arrive at an idea that turned into the Hideaway lyrics.

The lyrics are about our struggles in trying, with limited success, to help friends and family deal with their own personal life challenges. On a long walk (through a “forest of ancient tall trees”), Rob reflected on the compartmentalization that we sometimes adopt–for better or for worse–as we deal with those complexities…our Hideaway.

Should your path find a forest of ancient tall trees
Should your eye catch a river of stones gone astray
Should you ever hear the wild wind that weakens your knees
You should know you have found my one hideaway

One isn’t coming, one is long gone
The others are lost, can’t find a way
I cannot help them, I tried but I failed
I was lost in that one hideaway

Don’t know the Why, but the How and the When
Are clear to me now, you’ve got my attention
Don’t know the path but I must know the way
It brings me back to my one hideaway

I think the distance is three steps away
I know direction is too hard to say
I hope distinction is my one hideaway

Run Down — Miss the Attention
Walk Down — Two steps away
Lay Down — Too late to mention
Stay Down — One Hideaway
Run Down — Hideaway
Walk Down — Hideaway
Lay Down — Hideaway
Stay Down — Hideaway

One isn’t coming, one is long gone
The others are lost, can’t find the way
I cannot help them, I tried but I failed
I was lost in that one hideaway
I was lost in my one hideaway
Hideaway, Hideaway
Hideaway, Hideaway
Hideaway, Hideaway
Hideaway, Hideaway
